What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is slightly more complex than myopia or hyperopia (short-sightedness and long-sightedness) because it requires correction in multiple direction.
In myopia and hyperopia, the ophthalmologist subtly reshapes an essentially normal-shaped, spherical cornea. However, an astigmatic cornea looks more like an conical than a normal sphere. A flattened cone shape is formed in front of the eye. When light enters at different angles along this cone, two focal points form instead of one, causing you to see a blurry image. This blurry little print; Difficulty reading, squinting, inability to see both near and far, persistent headache and fatigue are the main causes of classical astigmatism symptoms.
The conical shape of the cornea means that the laser eye surgeon has to account for every distortion in every direction. Although this visual defect is certainly more complex than standard myopia or hyperopia, almost all astigmatism symptoms can be treated by a qualified surgeon using only the right technology.
